Well, the amount of RAM you need on your server depends on how many things are happening on the server at a given time.
For example, if you’re playing a vanilla server with 2 players on at once, you’ll only need around 2 Gigabytes, servers like these are very low maintenance and require little effort from the hardware to keep run.
If you have more mods and players you’ll need to add more RAM along with it. It’s not uncommon for some modded servers with modpacks to require 10GB of RAM more depending on the player count.
Things like world generation can cause RAM spikes as well. Making smaller vanilla servers run out of RAM if a lot chunks are being loaded.
